When my dear friend Isobel wanted to spend her 40th birthday in France, booking this villa was a no-brainer. With a beautifully renovated mosaic tiled pool, soaring ceilings, huge mirrors in the kitchen and the tree line surrounding the grounds, you’ll feel the history and privacy of this castle during the entirety of your stay.

The name Brise Bêche dates back to the Middle Ages, when the area was a vineyard. The house has been a cherished home of the de la Hante family for over 250 years, with a rich history tied to a family of financiers who helped shape France. During World War II, the house was sadly looted while unoccupied, and German soldiers used the grounds for training. A shot made by a German soldier is still visible on the mirror in the main hall.

The owners and groundskeepers took enormous care with renovating this villa. It’s unlike anywhere I’ve ever stayed. It’s the perfect escape from Paris for a long weekend.
